This month I am pleased to welcome Kreativity by Kenz for our craft fair display example! I was drawn to the unique and innovative ways that Kenz is displaying her artwork.
Kreativity by Kenz is a small business focused on sustainability and upcycling. Records cannot be recycled under normal conditions, so when they are damaged and unable to be played, they are thrown away and left to pile up in landfills. Kreativity by Kenz instead takes damaged records and gives them a new life as upcycled, unique, and fun, home decor. To date over 1,000 records have been hand-painted and saved from landfills!
Tell us the story behind how you designed this craft fair display?
I finally got the general layout down in a way that flows well for me after years of trial and error. This display is what I gravitate to for all outdoor shows. I wanted a way to display my repurposed records for people to see as they walked by my booth, and I only have space for maybe 1-2 records on the tables on stands, so more space was vital. The pegboard wall that breaks down was so quick and easy, and allowed me a place to display my art for customers to see as they walked by! I love a simple layout with the L shape tables that draws people in. I kept a photo book on the end of the table where people walked by as it tends to be a conversation starter. Additional signage ready to put against the tent or on the table was important to me to have for larger events where there are lots of vendors.
How did you adapt your design to fit the type of event you were attending?
Outdoor events are great for spreading out and creating a presence. I always find it easier to expand with an outdoor 10×10 space than cram everything down to a single table for indoor shows. I bring my large “Painted Vinyl Records” sign to lean on the tent so that it’s easy to see what I offer from far away and draw more customers in. Usually this is for larger events or festivals where there are lots of vendors and things for customers to visually sift through and helps me stand out! I also love to use my Pegboard display for my records and art. It gives people walking by the chance to see my work without coming in and flipping through the bin. It takes the pressure away and makes it a more causal shopping experience. I find many see the sign, then the pegboard display and come in to chat and look through my inventory. When you are a vendor in a sea of other vendors, sticking out is important!
What kinds of materials did you use to create this display?
o Pegboard display (2 peg boards painted from home depot, zip ties, and an Ikea clothing rack that breaks down quick). The pieces actually slide into my canopy tent bag front pocket for easy transportation.
o (2) 6 foot tables and a 10×10 white canopy tent (white is great as some shows only allow this color tent since it’s more “professional”)
o A hanging banner and printed chloroplast sign from a local sign shop. Both are great quality and weather proof.
o Vintage or second-hand suitcases, frames, signage. to enhance my retro branding and booth vibe while being transparent about my pricing, services I offer, etc.
o A table fabric banner with my more recent record logo. I like having my brand easy to read and see throughout my booth.
Please share your favorite 3 tips/secrets to designing a craft fair display
o For any artists or creators, take advantage of Snapfish or Shutterfly sales on photo books and create one full of examples of your past and current work. I have a section for examples of custom painted records and a section with some examples of what’s available on my Etsy. It’s almost always the first thing people touch or see when they enter the booth and it’s a great conversation starter. I also enjoy being able to flip through the book rather than being on my phone if someone asks if I’ve painted a subject before- more professional.
o Be resourceful! There’s no need to always buy new items for your booth. Second-hand thrifting is a lot of fun and can really enhance the vibe of your booth while saving you money. I’ve used vintage magazine racks in the past to hold my records, vintage suitcases to hold my prints, and even vintage or thrifted signage and ornate gold frames for pricing and other verbiage on the table.
o Pick a cohesive look or theme! My brand is very retro focused, with an emphasis on 70s colors and vibes. I use lots of oranges, browns, yellows, golds, and greens to bring everything together into an aesthetic package. I love the vibrant colors against the white tent. It speaks to the boldness of my art and my designs and who I am as an artist. Using décor or other items in your booth display that really lean into your theme can enhance the customer shopping experience.
