Tell us the story behind how you designed this craft fair display?
The design and curation of my craft fair display has been a labour of love! I have been trading at markets for around 2 years now and my display has definitely evolved over that time.
As I stock a range of resin homewares, jewellery and accessories, I have trialled many different display ideas. The most important being utilising height to ensure I can get the maximum display space so each group of products can shine! My most prized display piece is a large portable stand I bought from The Woodernist on Etsy. It has been my biggest investment in terms of my stall set up but it has been totally worth it.
I love designing spaces and so curating my own colourful haven for customers to browse and enjoy my work has always been an absolute delight for me. It’s always lovely to receive compliments on my stall display after many hours of planning, tweaking and rejigging! When I first started selling at markets I would draw detailed plans of how I envisioned the stall and tried several mock up displays. I still do this now if I’m introducing a new range of products or in preparation for a particular season such as Christmas but as I feel confident with the general layout of how I present my work this is certainly manageable.
How did you adapt your design to fit the type of event you were attending?
After many adjustments to my stall layout over the years I’m now confident in the overall set up so making tweaks here and there for different events doesn’t feel too overwhelming.
Last summer I traded at a festival so I had a larger area to display my pieces. The additional space was great as I was able to showcase my products on larger displays such as grid stands for headbands and other accessories. At Christmas I sell a range of festive pieces such as tree decorations, keepsake cards and gifts so I do have to pair down on the quantity of other products to focus on displaying these seasonal pieces.
What kinds of materials did you use to create this display?
I love using different items to display my pieces creatively. A lot of what I use to display my products are not what they were intended for but they work well for the aesthetic of the stall set up and maximise display space. I use wooden dish racks to display my trinket trays, kitchen drawer spice racks for larger homewares and Christmas cards and a glass storage jar from a charity shop to showcase my resin monstera stems. I also love adapting items I’ve found to fit with the size and type of products I’m exhibiting such as the jewellery stand I use to display my resin bookmarks.
Please share your favorite 3 tips/secrets to designing a craft fair display
1) Space is often limited at craft fairs and markets so using displays to add height to your stall is an absolute must. As well as maximizing the area to showcase your products, different heights add interest and will make your stall stand out.
2) As I sell several different lines of products, packing ahead of the event, set up and packing down afterwards can be time consuming. I now save so much time by utilizing display pieces that I can also store and transport products to and from events safely. I use acrylic tiered displays for my resin earrings and hair clips – I can keep everything together and simply put the whole display in a stackable box ready for the next event.
3) Always do a mock-up of your stall display ahead of the fair… and take a photo! Time is often limited for setting up before the event starts so having a clear idea of how you wish to present your work saves time and definitely reduces stress levels!
