Tell us the story behind how you designed this craft fair display?
When deciding on the sort of display I wanted, it was important to me that it was different; I wanted it to stand out. I have lots of small items, so I needed small, narrow shelves and a stand for brooches / hanging items.
I couldn’t find exactly what I needed ready-made, so the only choice was to build it. I ensured my logo, as well as the clouds and bees featured on the display, these are all part of my branding and feature on all my stationery.
My products have to be the most visible thing, so I opted to keep everything white. The only exception to this was my brooch stand, which is peach; again, this ties in with my brand colours. I have a banner that I use as a backdrop (if space at the venue allows). It removes background distractions so potential customers can focus clearly on the stall.
I use this stall set up at every craft fair I attend, it’s built in separate pieces so I can move, add, or take bits away to make the most of the space I am given.
How did you adapt your design to fit the type of event you were attending?
Since my display is white, it is a blank slate for me to decorate. For spring, I can decorate the corners of the shelves with pastel bunches of flowers. I have the flexibility to separate the shelves and string bunting between them. For Christmas, I draped everything with fairy lights and eucalyptus garlands and added little peach velvet bows. I put sprigs of holly with white berries in the baskets; it’s the little touches and attention to detail that makes the difference.
What kinds of materials did you use to create this display?
I used MDF(medium density fiberboard) to build everything – the shelves, the brooch stand, and the risers I occasionally use at the front of the display. The backdrop and tablecloth I customized myself using my Cricut to make the log, bees, and clouds. I have a variety of baskets and easels that I can use depending on the table size and the products I’m selling at that particular event. I also have battery-operated lights that are adjustable, so I can shine them on specific items (usually glittery ones). This is particularly effective in the winter months when it gets dark in the afternoon; it makes the stall look so inviting.
Please share your favorite 3 tips/secrets to designing a craft fair display
1) Make it unique; this is your chance to stand out from the crowd and grab people’s attention. If you can’t buy what you need, consider repurposing a piece of furniture or building it yourself.
2) Ensure you have height. I think this is one of the most important things; it adds selling space and looks more professional.
3) Whatever finish you go for, keep it uniform. It’s more than just displaying your products; you’re selling your brand. Your stall should reflect your colours and aesthetic.
