It’s no secret that there are many different ways to grow your business as a creative small business owner. One common approach for many businesses is to start to sell via online marketplaces. There have also been an abundance of marketplaces created in the last several years. Each marketplace has different strategies, functions, and features and customer bases. It’s also common to end up selling through multiple marketplaces to address different business needs. It’s also equally challenging for customers to keep track of different marketplaces and where they should spend their consumer dollars.
Marketplaces also run the risk of implementing features based on the loudest participants, as opposed to what the majority want. Collecting good measurable information is challenging for marketplaces, artisans, and consumers. Indie Sellers Guild is working to create research to systematically measure what artisan businesses and consumers want from their marketplaces.

One thing that is a little different about this survey is that it is a collaboration between industry and academia. This research study is done by Samantha Close, Ph.D. of DePaul University in collaboration with the Indie Sellers Guild. Find out more at indiesellersguild.org/accredit. The Indie Sellers Guild is a nonprofit fighting for a better, fairer internet–where makers, artists, designers and other creative indie sellers can run sustainable online businesses.
