The Spring 2023 magazine is live! We’re so excited to launch our spring publication this quarter to share these entrepreneurs’ amazing stories with you. We also get to take a look at some business resources and take a deep dive on different marketing strategies and selling methods.
In addition to our three featured artisans, this issue also explores the Pinterest Trends Report, Consignment vs Wholesale, and how to stand out in the virtual storefront.
I took my paper flowers and walked around the streets of New York City and asked these stores if they wanted to host a workshop or do a pop-up with me. A lot of stores said no but some said yes!
Poy Granati
After losing her full-time job during COVID, Poy revisited her old passion of paper flower making, at first just for her own peace of mind. But she soon found that she had something truly valuable on her hands and she put that passion to work and started her own paper flower business. She found that through classes and a wonderful network of women and friends she was able to launch her business to amazing heights in just under three years! This spring we explored her journey into entrepreneurship and how she continued her education in PR and marketing with classes and networking membership programs in order to perfect her social media presence and land some truly amazing opportunities for her business.
“Whether it’s receiving a flower from a loved one or getting to see their wedding bouquets every day, my paper flowers make people smile and I feel so blessed to be a part of their celebration.“
-Poy Granati @summerspacestudio
I always have a checklist on my phone and continue to ask myself “what is the most important thing I must do today?”
Akosua Karikari
Our second featured seller is Akosua, a nurse who, alongside all healthcare professionals, has endured much in the thralls of the covid pandemic. But those challenges and her work in health care has helped her to devleop the skills she’s needed to run a successful handmade business. In her article, Akosua recounts how her experience as a nurse has uniquely shaped her approach to starting and running a flourishing business. We learn all about how she got started selling her handbags, which are designed and inspired by her rich Ghanaian culture. She started, at first, just selling to friends, but quickly began branching out to people she met while on vacation. Now, Akosua has a flourishing business which is able to employ workers in Ghana and helps to share her culture with the world.
“My early goals for KariAndGo was to provide consistent jobs for artisans and spread the beauty of my Ghanaian culture to the world through my products.”
-Akosua Karikari @kariandgo
Every Sunday I will write down everything I need to do and want to do for the following week, and try to estimate how long it will take, so I can be realistic with my planning.
Jessie de Salis
Our third featured seller, Jessie, is yet another COVID story. Jessie started her business when she moved to the rural countryside of Cornwall during the pandemic. Here she was able to set up her own studio in an old abandoned barn and start making hand-printed textiles with beautiful and bold colors all made by her alone. In her article she teaches us about how she manages her time and makes space for her mental health in order to maintain the ever elusive creative productivity needed to run a thriving artistic business.
“It’s so amazing to have autonomy in your working life and direction. In the same breath, there is no one to hold you accountable if you have a week off, no one else to bring the energy. It’s all on you.”
-Jessie de Salis @jessiedesalis
